Accurate fault location of hybrid lines in distribution networks

Abstract: Fault transient traveling waves in hybrid transmission lines are complex and varied. Hence, this study proposes a method for fault location on the basis of the traveling wave polarity, combining single-ended and double-ended traveling wave ranging algorithms. First, the approximate reflected wave time is calculated based on the distance measured by the double-ended traveling wave ranging algorithms. Then, on the basis of the polarity of the traveling wave, the wave reflected from the point where the fault occu… Show more

“…The impedance method has the advantages of economy and simplicity in fault location of underground cables and overhead transmission lines [7], but its positioning results are greatly influenced by factors such as system operation, line impedance, and load current. The traveling wave method has better application value compared to the impedance method [8,9], which can be divided into single ended method [10] and double ended method [11,12]. The key step is to accurately detect the traveling wave head [13,14].…”

“…Therefore, whether lightning interference can be correctly identified is one of the key problems that must be solved in the practical application of traveling wave protection and transient protection. Establishing a convenient, practical, fast and accurate lightning monitoring and early warning system in areas with frequent lightning activities can not only predict lightning accidents before they occur, but also provide auxiliary decision-making for the power industry to formulate distribution lines for reference, which is of great significance to effectively reduce the harm of lightning accidents in DMSs 5 .…”
