Accurate One-Way Delay Estimation With Reduced Client Trustworthiness

Abstract: Abstract-The requirement for accurate one-way delay (OWD) estimation lead to the recent introduction of an algorithm enabling a server to estimate OWDs between itself and a client by cooperating with two other servers, requiring neither clientclock synchronization nor client trustworthiness in reporting one-way delays. We evaluate the algorithm by deriving the probability distribution of its absolute error, and compare its accuracy with the well-known round-trip halving algorithm. While neither algorithm requi… Show more

“…Under this circumstance, a second even milli-second level delay is detrimental to the interest of life and asset. Initially, we briefly discuss the delay components that are responsible for the overall end-to-end latency along a particular route [2]. Later, we determine how to minimize such components theoretically and practically.…”

“…In this section, the parameters which will be employed to represent the results of this study are defined First Node Die Cycle (FNDC): the cycle number for which the first node dies. Half Nodes Alive Cycle (HNAC): the cycle in which half of the nodes are still alive. Network's lifetime: the number of cycles in which 90% of the nodes are dead and the network is practically unusable. Sum of the Transmitted Energy (SOTE): the total energy consumed for data transferring in a cycle.…”

“…This method is less accurate than OWAMP-like protocols [34]. We introduce a novel OWDestimation protocol, which can be more accurate than halving the RTT [21], yet requires less cooperation than required by OWAMP-like protocols. This protocol is detailed in §5 below.…”
