ace Integrity of Shot Peened Aluminium Alloy 7075-T651

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of surface hardening by shotpeening (SP) on fatigue properties of high-strength aluminium alloy 7075-T651. The paper describes the effects of SP treatment by presenting analyses of surface roughness measurement, microhardness profiles, microstructure changes, residual stresses and material bending fatigue resistance. The obtained results show a favourable influence of SP treatment on fatigue properties as induced compressive residual stresses and… Show more

“…Shot peening has higher pressure duration and tends to increase surface hardening more markedly [3]. An example of this on AA7075-T6 is a study by Becker [21] which sees no increase in surface hardness for LSP AA7075-T6 and a 20% increase from shot peening; another is Zupanc and Grum [43] who see a 25% increase on AA7075-T651 after shot peening. Nevertheless, the studies do not discuss the effects of compressive residual stress on hardness testing, therefore further shows that the effects of the compressive residual stress start to quickly diminish with increasing depth from 0.2 mm, leading to the transition from negative to positive local mean stress.…”

“…SP results in a surface layer plastic deformation that generates residual compressive stress due to the application of multiple shot impacts on the part surface [10]. Various studies have reported that SP could improve the hardness, fatigue strength, and tensile strength of the part surface of conventional materials, such as Al alloys [11,12] and Ti6Al4V [13]. The main process parameters of SP are the Almen intensity and surface coverage [14].…”

“…Another surface treatment method with the aim of increasing fatigue strength [8] is SP, whose development began in the late 1920s. During SP, the surface of the treated metallic component is exposed to a flux of small particles of high hardness.…”
