Achalasia: A syndrome

Abstract: With great interest, we read the article of Nelson et al. 1 The authors made a well-designed study, showing that some achalasia biomarkers are associated with manometric findings in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), and they demonstrated two "mototypes". These findings suggest achalasia has different phenotypes, possibly due to different etiologies.Unlike a sole disorder, achalasia is probably a syndrome.
