Achieving high and equitable coverage of adolescent HPV vaccine in Scotland

Abstract: School-based vaccination can achieve high and equitable uptake of a multidose vaccine in a routine immunisation programme. Sustained high coverage with HPV vaccine across Scotland provides a stable platform for planning future strategies for cervical screening and understanding the impact of the vaccination at a population level.

“…Location of HPV vaccination varied by age group; younger adolescents were more likely to receive vaccines at school, whereas older adolescents were more likely to go to their health care provider. 47,68,72 Similarly, adolescents with poor school attendance had lower vaccination rates than those in school, underscoring the importance of convenience in modifying behavior. 72 Finally, the success of environmental interventions in developing countries through schooland clinic-based vaccination programs illustrated that high vaccination coverage is not limited to high-income populations.…”

“…35 Coverage of the routine three-dose HPV vaccination programme was consistently over 86% in England from 2012 to 2014 36 and over 80% in Scotland. 37 In addition to routine flu vaccination for children aged 2 to 17 years, which was introduced in 2013 and is gradually being rolled out and offered to the youngest children first, 30 the flu vaccine is recommended for all adults over 65 years and for adults/children with chronic health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious complications of the illness, for example pregnant women, children/adults with underlying disease particularly chronic respiratory or cardiac conditions. 38 In the winter of 2014/15 uptake in England in those aged over 65 years was 73% 34 and 76% in Scotland, 39 close to the 75% target.…”
