“…Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs) have outstanding merits including low cost, flexibility, lightweight, and transparence toward desired wavelengths by selective light-absorption. Thanks to the continuous efforts from numerous researchers, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the BHJ OSCs have engaged a rapid progress in recent years. , Low-cost and facile synthesis of organic solar cell materials starting from simple precursors in an atom-economical way will play a key role in the large-scale and practical application of this emerging technology. Up to date, Stille polymerization (i.e., C–Sn/C–Br cross coupling) has become the most widely used tool to the synthesis of OSCs polymers, which, however, requires complicate and harsh reaction conditions toward C–Sn prefunctionalization of monomers and produces stoichiometric organotin toxic byproducts, and the unavoidable Sn residue integrated into the polymer chains. In this regard, there is an urgent need to develop environmentally friendly and atom-economic polymerizations to facilitate the scalable synthesis of π-functional polymers and realize the full potentials of OSCs in practical application.…”
