Achilles Tendinosis: Treatment Options

Abstract: Athletes usually complain of an ongoing or chronic pain over the Achilles tendon, but recently even non-athletes are experiencing the same kind of pain which affects their daily activities. Achilles tendinosis refers to a degenerative process of the tendon without histologic or clinical signs of intratendinous inflammation. Treatment is based on whether to stimulate or prevent neovascularization. Thus, until now, there is no consensus as to the best treatment for this condition. “…Until now in literature there is no a "gold standard" for the treatment of the Achilles tendinopathy [25], because a lot of therapies demonstrated a different percentage of good results and time of recovery mostly long, hardly acceptable from the athletes, that have to return to the sport activity in reasonably short time. Besides in some cases side effects have occurred too [16] [17].…”

“…Insertional Achilles tendinosis is a degenerative process that occurs at the insertion of the Achilles tendon onto the calcaneum without clinical or histologic signs of intratendinous inflammation (1)(2)(3). It is a common cause of posterior heel pain in both active and inactive individuals (4).…”
