“…The vagal efferent response to PCPGABA at the dose of 4 mg/kg, s.c. preceded gastric acid secretion. The acid secretagogue response to PCPGABA was more potent than that in response to histamine or bethanechol (9). Muscimol, an agonist acting selectively at bicuculline-sensitive GABAA receptor sites (25), also caused an activation in vagal efferent transmission more rapidly than PCPGABA, followed by gastric hypersecretion which is in accordance with previous findings using pylorus ligated rats (26).…”

“…The pathological mechanisms of stress ulceration nave otten been attnbuted to gastric hypersecretion (21)(22)(23). Pharmacological studies of brain neurotransmitters suggest that central GABAergic mechanisms are involved in the stimulation of gastric acid secretion in several species (7)(8)(9)(10)(11) and also participate in the aggravation of stress-induced ulceration.…”

“…y-Aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mimetics injected sys temically have been shown to produce significant in creases in gastric acid secretion in a number of species including rats (1, 2), dogs (3) and humans (4); and these secretagogue effects were totally abolished by truncal vagotomy and atropine (1,2). Moreover GABA at acid secretagogue doses caused a marked activation of vagal efferent discharges at the cervical level (1).…”

“…We have recently shown that certain GABA mimetic ligands such as isoguvacine, a GABAA agonist, and 5 aminovaleric acid, a weak GABAA agonist and a GABAB antagonist, also stimulate gastric secretion with a potency similar to or greater than that of GABA (2). Baclofen seems to be one of the most potent in stimulating gastric secretion (2).…”
