Acinetobacter baumanii folliculitis in a patient with AIDS

Abstract: Gram-negative folliculitis usually involves the face and develops in patients with acne or rosacea during long-term antibiotic therapy. Numerous pathogens have been found, but not, until now, Acinetobacter baumanii which has previously been recognized as an important cause of nosocomial infections and hospital outbreaks. We report here a case of A. baumanii folliculitis of the face, neck, arms and upper part of trunk in a patient with AIDS responding to intravenous treatment with ticarcillin-clavulanic acid. “…318 Most of these infections are caused by a subgroup of lactose-fermenting bacteria, resulting in superficial pustules grouped around the nose. 318 Citrobacter diversus, Acinetobacter baumanii, 320 Klebsiella sp., 321 Escherichia coli, and Enterobacter sp. 319 In others, deep nodular and cystic lesions occur as a result of infection by species of Proteus.…”

“…In our research the tested in vitro concentrations of basic PABE components that showed antibacterial activity against A. baumannii were at least three orders of the magnitude higher than the concentration of substances found in plasma of patients after oral ingestion of the same quantity of PBE. 15,16 Therefore, the concern exists that the concentration of the bioactive substances in plasma of patients would not be high enough to treat bacteraemia, but since A. baumannii causes also skin and wound infections, 27,28,29 application of PABE in sufficient concentration in such cases is certainly possible. Except investigated basic substances, proanthocyanidins that were determined in PABE could have also contributed to the antibacterial activity.…”

“…103 Acinetobacter baumanniieassociated infection Key points d Acinetobacter baumanniieassociated infection is an emerging nosocomial multidrugresistant skin infection d Disease is associated with high mortality rate d Diagnosis is by bodily fluids culture d Treat using broad-spectrum antibiotics Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative rod bacterium. It is commonly found in soil and water and has the ability to survive on artificial surfaces for extended periods of timedmaking it an increasingly common cause of multidrug-resistant nosocomial infections [104][105][106] with the potential to rival MRSA. 107 A baumannii refers to a group of 3 bacteria (A baumannii, Acinetobacter nosocomialis, and Acinetobacter pitti), which cause more human infections than other Acinetobacter species.…”
