Acoustic Analysis of Voice in Singers: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Overall, a great heterogeneity was noted regarding population, tasks, instruments, and parameters. There is a lack of standardized criteria for the evaluation of singing voice. In order to implement acoustic analysis as a part of comprehensive voice evaluation exclusively for singers, there is a certain need for methodical sound studies.

“…Along with the VF vibration amplitude, a frequency spectrum of vibrations is also an extremely important parameter. In the clinical practice, acoustic voice analysis has acquired a wide use as a method of phonation objectivization [ 44 , 73 , 74 ]. Nevertheless, there exist techniques for the direct examination of the VF vibrations, which become of great importance in the animal experiments due to acoustic analysis being non-applicable [ 75 79 ].…”

“…Singing requires precise and controlled voice use for prolonged periods of time with well-established breath support, high-quality articulation, and pitch alterations [9] and the demands that singers impose on their voice organ in singing vary measurably from those required for speech [10]. Therefore, singers are referred to as the most demanding vocal group [5,11] and require special considerations for voice evaluation and treatment [12]. Understanding the principles of the singing voice technique is crucial to all healthcare professionals treating singers because it is always present to a certain degree in any vocal issue that affects a singer [13].…”

“…Acoustic analysis is an instrumental resource for research, clinical therapy and voice pedagogy practices because it can lead to inferences about the vocal production mechanism in both speaking and singing productions 1,4 . Acoustic analysis can also integrate physiological and perceptual arenas in voice and speech investigations.…”
