Acoustic and Perceptual Indicators of Normal and Pathological Voice

Abstract: The aim of this study was to obtain acoustic correlates to vocal quality of a group of men and women with and without voice disorders, based on evaluations of a group of judges experienced in the field of vocal rehabilitation. In male subjects, perceptual evaluation of normal, hoarse and rough voice qualities was related to the following acoustic features: frequency perturbation measures (JITA, RAP, and SPPQ), amplitude perturbation (SAPQ and VAM), soft phonation index (SPI) and fundamental frequency tremor in… Show more

“…The synthesis techniques employed in the earliest studies ͑Wendahl, 1963, 1966a, b͒ did not include vocal-tract filtering, and used a highly unnatural sawtooth source along with levels of jitter and shimmer ͑up to Ϯ50%͒ that greatly exceed those usually associated with the human voice ͑e.g., Andrianopoulos et al, 2001;Munoz et al, 2003͒. Stimuli lacked pitch contours or formant structure, and varied in only one acoustic dimension at a time.…”

“…MDVP is one of the extensively used computer-based software systems since its introduction to the research field in 1982. 9 All the evaluations in this study were performed by a speech-language therapist and an otorhinolaryngologist experienced in this type of assessments. The microphone used was a Shure SM 48 dynamic, and it was kept at a fixed distance of 5 cm, in front of the subject's mouth.…”

“…Soft phonation index (SPI) is an average ratio of the lower frequency harmonic energy (70 Hz-1600 Hz) to the higher frequency (1600 Hz-4500 Hz) harmonic energy. 9,10 Eleven out of 33 MDVP acoustic parameters of voice were chosen for this study. The other MDVP parameters were excluded since they were irrelevant for the purposes of the study or since they lacked sufficient proof of validity in the literature.…”
