Acoustic Correlates of English Lexical Stress Produced by Chinese Dialect Speakers Compared to Native English Speakers

Abstract: English second language learners often experience difficulties in producing native-like English lexical stress. It is unknown which acoustic correlates, such as fundamental frequency (F0), duration, and intensity, are the most problematic for Chinese dialect speakers. The present study investigated the prosodic transfer effects of first language (L1) regional dialects on the production of English stress contrasts. Native English speakers (N = 20) and Chinese learners (N = 60) with different dialect backgrounds… Show more

“…Regardless of the need to investigate the type of errors Arab EFL learners face in the production of English Lexical stress, researchers from different contextual backgrounds have asserted the importance of studying the dialectal variation of the participants involved in studying lexical stress production (Guo, 2022;Kallio et al, 2022). That is because some regional dialects manifest different phonology systems, which result in various findings.…”

“…Due to differences in stress patterns among Arabic dialects, the producibility of stress patterns in Arabic cannot be generalised. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the effect of dialectal stress patterns when differences exist to ensure more reliable data, as recommended by Koffi (2021) and Guo (2022).…”

“…First of all, most Chinese students often do not have a good sense of language when they pronounce vowels, and it is difficult to distinguish the timbre and pitch of vowels, which makes it difficult for them to achieve accuracy when imitating English vowels. In addition, Chinese students usually bring the phonological habits of their mother tongue into English phonetic learning [6], resulting in various deviations in vowel pronunciation. For example, many Chinese students fail to distinguish between front vowels and back vowels in English and pronounce them as similar sounds, which gives people the impression that their English pronunciation is not standard enough.…”
