“…Part of the success of cochlear implants seems to be related to the development of sophisticated signal-processing techniques and bioinspired coding strategies developed over the years (Clark, 2015;Boulet et al, 2016;Jain and Vipin Ghosh, 2018). Despite these encouraging results, most visual prosthesis devices only try to emulate the phototransducer aspects of the retina and do not consider the complex processes that are found in the mammalian visual system.…”

“…If we compare the current status of visual prostheses with that of cochlear implants (hearing restoration prostheses), there are some interesting observations. Thus, much of the recent successes of cochlear implants has been due to the advancement of signal processing techniques developed over the years and to the development of state-of-the-art multi-channel implants (Boulet et al, 2016;Jain & Vipin Ghosh, 2018;Clark, 2015). However, present visual prostheses only emulate the phototransducer aspect of the retina and lack most of the processing functionality that is found in the visual system.…”

“…Acoustic parameters (e.g., number of electrodes, pulse rate, etc.) are adjusted to adapt electric stimulation of the impaired ear using acoustic stimulation of the unimpaired ear [13]. The implantation of a single CI was previously recommended in cases of bilateral hearing loss, but indications were extended.…”
