With the aim of decreasing CO2 emissions, car producers' efforts are focused, among others, on reducing the weight of vehicles yet preserving the overall vibrational comfort. To do so, new lightweight materials combining high stiffness and high (passive) damping are sought. For panels essentially loaded in bending, sandwich composites made of two external metallic stiff layers (skins) and an inner polymeric (i.e. absorbing) core are broadly used. Now aiming at creating materials by design with a better control of the final performance of the part, the tuning of the local material properties is pursued. To this end, the present work focuses on controlling the spatial in-plane viscoelastic properties of the polymeric core of such sandwich structures. The spatial patterning is achieved using a recently developed UV irradiation selective technique of Room Temperature Vulcanization (RTV) silicone elastomeric membrane, in which the ultraviolet (UV) irradiation dose, curing time and temperature are the process parameters controlling the viscoelastic properties of the polymeric membrane. Finally, a protocol for the realization of architected aluminum -silicone -aluminum composite sandwich panels is proposed. The influence of UV irradiation selective technique is demonstrated by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) measurements on the silicone core itself and by the Corrected Force Analysis Technique (CFAT) to measure the equivalent Young's modulus and damping of the sandwich structure over a large frequency band. As a first demonstration application, sandwich beams with different core patterns (homogeneous and heterogeneous) are designed and tested. Furthermore, the analytical formalism developed by Guyader et. al. is used to model the vibro-acoustic performances of the homogenous sandwich beams and fair model-experiments comparisons are obtained. The spatial patterning of the polymer layer is found to successfully affect the local properties of the composite heterogeneous beam as evidenced by the CFAT method. Finally, this work permits the enunciation of guidelines for designing complex architectured systems with further control of the vibro-acoustics performances.

The development of simple, special purpose prediction methods to calculate the acoustic radiation of structures is one requirement of industry. The present study developed and validated a calculation tool to predict the noise radiated by multilayer plates excited by vibrating sources characterized from mobility measurements carried out on the separated elements, namely the multilayer plate and vibrating source. A comparison of the calculations and the measurements presented in this article allows a high degree of confidence in this predictive tool. Although the situation modelled is, a priori, relatively far from an industrial problem involving an excessively noisy machine, the expertise of engineers often helps them determine the section of a plate responsible for the acoustic problem (for example, a section of housing or the sill of a car). The calculation tool would therefore appear to be useful in designing high damping-capacity, multilayer panels of low surface mass for use in correcting the defective part of the machine. © 2000 Institute of Noise Control Engineering.

The fuzzy structure theory was introduced 20 years ago in order to model the effects of complex subsystems imprecisely known on a master structure. This theory was only aimed at structural dynamics. In this paper, an extension of that theory is proposed in developing an elastoacoustic element useful to model sound-insulation layers for computational vibroacoustics of complex systems. The simplified model constructed enhances computation time and memory allocation because the number of physical and generalized degrees of freedom in the computational vibroacoustic model is not increased. However, these simplifications introduce model uncertainties. In order to take into account these uncertainties, the nonparametric probabilistic approach recently introduced is used. A robust simplified model for sound-insulation layers is then obtained. This model is controlled by a small number of physical and dispersion parameters. First, the extension of the fuzzy structure theory to elastoacoustic element is presented. Second, the computational vibroacoustic model including such an elastoacoustic element to model sound-insulation layer is given. Then, a design methodology to identify the model parameters with experiments is proposed and is experimentally validated. Finally, the theory is applied to an uncertain vibroacoustic system.
