Noise exposure prediction models for health effect studies normally estimate free field exposure levels outside. However, to assess the noise exposure inside dwellings, an estimate of indoor sound levels is necessary. To date, little field data is available about the difference between indoor and outdoor noise levels and factors affecting the damping of outside noise. This is a major cause of uncertainty in indoor noise exposure prediction and may lead to exposure misclassification in health assessments. This study aims to determine sound level differences between the indoors and the outdoors for different window positions and how this sound damping is related to building characteristics. For this purpose, measurements were carried out at home in a sample of 102 Swiss residents exposed to road traffic noise. Sound pressure level recordings were performed outdoors and indoors, in the living room and in the bedroom. Three scenarios—of open, tilted, and closed windows—were recorded for three minutes each. For each situation, data on additional parameters such as the orientation towards the source, floor, and room, as well as sound insulation characteristics were collected. On that basis, linear regression models were established. The median outdoor–indoor sound level differences were of 10 dB(A) for open, 16 dB(A) for tilted, and 28 dB(A) for closed windows. For open and tilted windows, the most relevant parameters affecting the outdoor–indoor differences were the position of the window, the type and volume of the room, and the age of the building. For closed windows, the relevant parameters were the sound level outside, the material of the window frame, the existence of window gaskets, and the number of windows.

Acoustic comfort in classroom is significant to protect the health and enhance scholastics performance of both students and teachers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the acoustic comfort in a primary school of Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Soga, Batu Pahat through objective and subjective evaluations. Field measurements were carried out to measure the background noise and reverberation time inside the classrooms. Six classrooms were tested to investigate the acoustic performance of the learning spaces of this school. Besides, questionnaires survey and interviews have also been conducted to assess the acoustic comfort of the teachers on the teaching and learning process. The measured background noise and reverberation times inside all the selected classrooms were very high comparing to the recommended values. The results from the survey showed that teachers were not satisfied with the acoustics comfort of this school’s acoustic environment.

Estimation of Reverberation Time in Classrooms Using the Residual Minimization Method

The objective of the residual minimization method is to determine a coefficient correcting the Sabine's model. The Sabine's equation is the most commonly applied formula in the designing process of room acoustics with the use of analytical methods. The correction of this model is indispensable for its application in rooms having non-diffusive acoustic field. The authors of the present paper will be using the residual minimization method to work out a suitable correction to be applied for classrooms. For this purpose, five different poorly dampened classrooms were selected, in which the measurements of reverberation time were carried out, and for which reverberation time was calculated with the use of theoretical methods. Three of the selected classrooms had the cubic volume of 258.5 m 3 and the remaining two had the cubic volume of 190.8 m 3 . It was sufficient to estimate the correction for the Sabine's equation. To verify the results, three other classrooms were selected, in which also the measurements of reverberation time were carried out. The results were verified by means of real measurements of reverberation time and by means of computer simulations in the program ODEON.
