Acoustics in School Sport Halls and Its Implications for Physical Education/Akustika u školskim dvoranama i njezine implikacije na nastavu tjelesnoga odgoja

Abstract: Due to the demanding acoustic conditions in physical education lessons and the related problems with health and academic success, the aim of this study was to examine the acoustic conditions of teaching in sport halls in Slovenia. Thirtyfive sport halls were selected, reflecting four types of school sport halls grouped according to the period of their construction. The reverberation time was measured, and speech intelligibility was calculated by means of the Speech Transmission Index. Eighty-six per cent of th… Show more

“…A higher risk of developing hearing disorders in PETs is also associated with several factors ( 23 , 47 , 51 ), including working in spaces with high reverberation, exposure to loud activities, dust and concurrent teaching, all of which are common in PE ( 16 , 52 ). Noise exposure, particularly in indoor swimming pools and triple gyms, often exceeds acceptable levels for acoustic comfort, reaching around 80 dB(A) ( 53 ).…”

“…Various studies have addressed these issues through in situ analysis [2,3] and simulations [3,4,5], focusing on parameters such as reverberation time and speech intelligibility through STI and musical and vocal clarity. The acoustic quality in these environments has direct implications for the learning outcomes in subjects like Physical Education [6].…”
