Acquisition of new genes by oral Neisseria.

Abstract: SUMMARY It is suggested that part of the increased pharyngeal carriage of meningococci reported in patients with gonorrhoea is due to misidentification of gonococci which have been transformed to maltose fermenters by DNA from normal throat flora. The distribution of specific aminopeptidases in strains of gonococci, meningococci isolated from the throat and meningococci from systemic infections is consistent with this view. Gonococci oxidising maltose and gonococci with -y-L-glutamyl aminopeptidase activity, b… Show more

“…3d) suggests that aspartate can be deaminated to fumarate by aspartase, or transaminated to oxaloacetate with the production of glutamate by aminotransferase. Oral bacteria, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella interemedia, and some Neisseria species, are known to possess asparaginase (14,37), aspartase, and aminotransferase (28,32). β-Alanine is known to be produced by the carboxylation of aspartate (14), however no production was observed under the experimental conditions in the present study.…”

“…This observation suggests a basis for the dissemination of tetM in vivo. Since other Neisseria species can acquire DNA from N. gonorrhoeae by transformation (17) or by conjugation (14), the possibility also exists that tetM will be acquired by these organisms as well.…”

“…In recent years, several unusual strains of gram-negative, oxidase-positive diplococci have been isolated that are obviously neisserias but cannot be clearly identified as a recognized species (43,51,69). The strains isolated by these investigators exhibited characteristics of N. gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis and in some cases could not be unequivocally assigned to either species (43,73).…”
