Acrylic Cement Advantages or Disadvantages in Orthopaedic Surgery

Abstract: Acrylic cement was introduced into practice by Sir John Charnley 40 years ago. The advantages of this cement are the good and durable fixation of the hip and knee prostheses ensuring the distribution of the forces from the implant to the bone. It is also used in vertebroplasties, osteoporosis and bone substitutes. One of the major problems associated with the use of bone cements is the decrease of the mechanical properties in time due to the incompatibility between the organic matrix and the inorganic phase. I… Show more

“…In his studies (2015) Cohrane [20] identified the importance of physical exercise in improving pain and functional status in patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis. , hypothesis confirmed by Fransen et al (21) The guidelines recommend the practice of the physical exercise to patients with knee osteoarthritis (even if the results are beneficial in the short term, up to 6 months) [1] and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used locally and not orally due to reactions that may occur at the digestive tract level, cardiovascular and renal [22,23,24,25]. The recommendations of ACR/EULAR (The American College of Rheumatology/ The European League Against Rheumatism) indicate the combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment to ensure optimal results in the treatment of the knee [26,27,28].…”

“…The low serum concentrations of 25 (OH) D have a negative correlation with the body mass index and with several anthropometric or biochemical surrogates [9]. The presence of low serum vitamin D levels in obese patients may be due to the lack of outdoor physical activity, inadequate dietary intake, retention of vitamin D in adipose tissue, or a combination of these factors [10,11].…”

“…Bone cement is a material employed to stabilize implants and ensure uniform mechanical distribution between the implant and the bone [ 3 ]. Apart from its use in hip implants, bone cement is also used in joint reconstruction, cranioplasty, aneurysm investment, fixation of pathological fractures, blind eyeballs and bone replacement [ 4 ].…”
