Action of Atrial Natriuretic Peptide in the Immature Ovine Kidney

Abstract: ABSTRACT. This study examines the effects of infused human atrial natriuretic peptide 1-28 (hANP) on ovine fetal renal function. hANP was infused into chronically cannulated ovine fetuses of 103-128 days gestation (term 142-152 days) at 1.1 (4), 2.2 (5), and 4.4 (5) ~g / h for 2 h. Isotonic saline was infused in 10 control experiments. The fractional reabsorption of infused lithium was used as a marker of proximal tubular sodium reabsorption. Glomerular filtration rate and urinary water and electrolyte excreti… Show more

“…There is evidence that ANP increases urine flow (32,33) and/or sodium excretion and fractional excretion of sodium (8). Taken together these data indicate that exogenous ANP probably increases sodium and water excretion in the normal euvolemic fetus.…”

“…Recently it has been demonstrated (17) in this laboratory that infusions of ANF (4.4 pg/h) into relatively immature ovine fetuses reduce FRN, and FRL; from 96.5 + 1.0 and 64.3 k 7.5% to 86.5 a 2.8 and 46.8 + 9.6%. In the present study similar reductions in FRN, and FRL, were seen from 96.6 2 0.2 and 65.7 a 2.2% to 87.35 t-3.0 and 47.0 f 7.4%.…”

“…Basal arterial plasma ANP concentrations are greater in the fetus than in the pregnant adult and increase further after volume expansion and acute hypoxemia (10,11). Increases in plasma ANP concentrations within a physiologic range decrease combined ventricular output and umbilical-placental blood flow (12), but do not significantly alter mean arterial blood pressure or heart rate (12,13). At present, relatively little is known about the effects of ANP on the fetal pulmonary vasculature.…”
