Ten organotin derivatives of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (Hmbt), 2-mercaptobenzoxazole (Hmbo) and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (Hmbi) have been synthesised and their structures characterised by spectroscopic methods. Triorganotin derivatives are all S-bonded to the ligand and four-coordinate at tin except Bu,Sn( mbo) which is a five-coordinate trans-ONSnR, polymer at 78K. The crystal structure of Cy,Sn(mbt) has been determined and confirms the tetrahedral geometry at tin. Bu,Sn(mbt), is weakly six-coordinate by N,S chelating ligands. Biocidal activity patterns are presented for Cy,Sn(mbt), Ph,Sn(mbt) and Ph,Sn( mbo).

The synergistic properties of the combined admixture of benzenecarbonitrile and 5-bromovanillin (BNV) on the corrosion resistance of 1018 carbon steel in 1 M HCl was analysed with potentiodynamic polarization technique, weight loss method, micro-analytical studies and ATF-FTIR spectroscopy. Results obtained show the admixed organic compound was effective with optimal corrosion inhibition values of 99.33% and 90.34% at 1.25% BNV concentration from both electrochemical methods due to the effective inhibition action and passivation characteristics of the protonated inhibitor molecules in the acid solution. Primary amines, stretch alkyl halides and C-H triple bond functional groups of the molecules were observed to actively adsorb during the corrosion inhibition reaction from ATF-FTIR spectroscopic analysis. Calculations from thermodynamic evaluation confirmed cationic adsorption mechanism to be chemisorption obeying the Langmuir and Frumkin adsorption isotherm. Micro-analytical observations of the inhibited carbon steel morphology significantly contrast the unprotected steel due to visible surface deterioration and presence of micro/macro-pits. The organic derivatives showed mixed type inhibition reactions.

“…This may perhaps be the reason why a moderate inhibitor efficiency (40 %) obtained at as low a concentration as 10 -5 M of the inhibitor. The relatively enhanced inhibitor efficiency obtained with MeBTH may be attributed to the inductive effect of the CH 3 group [33] at position 2 in the thiazole ring which enhances the electron density at the heteroatoms and thereby facilitate stronger bonds with the alloy surface leading to firmer adsorption. This is supported by a larger shift in ν C=N and ν C-S observed in the IR in case of MeBTH alloy films compared to that of BTH alloy film.…”

Brass as an alloy composed mainly of copper is great industrial uses such as heat exchangers and similar other facility due to its good thermal properties. Due to the presence of the considerable ratio of zinc the alloy suffers from zinc dissolution or dezincification. Dezincification rate increases with the increase in the ratio of zinc in the alloy. In this study benzothiazole (BTH) and its substituent's 2-methylbenzothiazole (MeBTH), 2-aminobenzothiazole (ABTH), 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBTH) and 2-phenylbenzothiazole (PhBTH) have been used as corrosion inhibitors for α-brass in stirred 0.1 M HClO 4 . The methods of investigation include weight loss, Tafel and linear polarizations and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The order of inhibition efficiency (% E) was calculated and the values obtained has indicated the sequence of inhibition efficiency was found to be BTH < MeBTH < ABTH < PhBTH < MBTH. The calculated values of thermodynamic parameters support this order. The inhibitors were found to suppress the corrosion rate by the formation of films which were identified by IR, SEM and EDAX techniques.
