Actions of Huangqi decoction against rat liver fibrosis: a gene expression profiling analysis

Abstract: BackgroundHuangqi decoction (HQD) is used for liver fibrosis and cirrhosis treatment in Chinese medicine. This study aims to investigate the pharmacological actions of HQD against liver fibrosis in rats by high-throughput gene expression profiling, network analysis and real-time qRT-PCR.MethodsWe analyzed the profiles of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver fibrosis in rat. The liver tissue samples of control group (n = 3), model group (n = 3) and HQD group (n = 3) w… Show more

“…Meaning that administrating with 3.0 g/kg TCM diet represented a stress factor, which was confirmed by the results of liver enzymes assay (Table ). Similar to our findings, a mixture of AM, CP and GU has been reported to be useful for the prevention of liver injury in rat liver model (Wang, Tong, Li, Cao, & Su, ; Zhang et al, , ). Another study reported that a mixture of A. membranaceus and G. glabra could offer hepatoprotective effects and was indicated by lowering ALT level (but not AST levels) in yellow perch ( Perca flavescens ) (Elabd, Wang, Shaheen, Yao, & Abbass, ).…”

“…Huangqi decoction (HQD), a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), consists of radix astragali and radix glycyrrhizae and is used for consumptive disease and chronic liver diseases since the Song Dynasty. In our previous preclinical studies, HQD reduced the liver injury caused by dimethylnitrosamine and decreased the liver fibrosis induced by bile duct ligation (Du et al, 2012 ; Liu et al, 2012 ; Li et al, 2015 ; Zhang G. B. et al, 2015 ).…”

“…It is made up of Radix Astragali (RA) and Radix Glycyrrhizae (RG). HQD can slow the progress of liver fibrosis (Zhang et al, ) by decreasing the levels of inflammatory factors released by Kupffer cells and inhibiting the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSC), the extracellular matrix (ECM) and collagen synthesis in the liver (Du et al, ; Liu et al, ). Some components of HQD were reported to show anti‐liver fibrosis effects.…”
