Activated CD4-positive T-lymphocytes and impaired cell-mediated immunity in patients with carcinoma of the urinary bladder with schistosomiasis

Abstract: Patients with schistosomiasis of the urinary bladder (SB) associated with carcinoma of the bladder (SCB) or carcinoma of the prostate (SCP) have a variety of immunologic abnormalities, including the presence of HLA‐DR+ and interleukin‐2 receptor‐positive (IL‐2R+) T‐lymphocytes in circulating blood. This study demonstrated that, the HLA‐DR+ and IL‐2R+ antigens are selectively expressed on majority of the CD4+ T‐lymphocytes of patients with SCB, whereas, these antigens are expressed almost equally on both CD4+ a… Show more

“…The highly enhanced synthesis of two lymphokines, BCGF and BCDF by the CD3+ TcR y/6 cells from SCB patients appears to be an important intrinsic feature of the immune system in this disease. These results are in consistent with the impaired cell-mediated immunity [7], as well as the humoral antibody abnormality related to the hypergammaglobulinemia found in this disease [l-31. Therefore, the elevated secretion of BCGF and BCDF by the CD3+ TcR y/6 Tcells may have an pivotal role in the disease pathogenesis in SCB.…”

Box 641, Abha, Saudi Arabia Abbreviations: SB: Schistosomiasis of the urinary bladder SCB: Schistosomiasis with carcinoma of the urinary bladder BCGF B cell growth factor BCDF B cell differentiation factor SEA: Soluble egg antigen prehensive study documented the severe alterations in T cells subsets and the presence of increased percentages of activated CD4+ T cells in patients with schistosomiasis [7]. In the present study we sought to determine whether the expression of TcR might also be altered in schistosomiasis infection in humans.…”

“…The observed increased frequency of HPV infections and HPVassociated CIN II/III among women with either a history of or active bilharzias fits both hypotheses although the numbers of high-grade neoplasia are too small to prove which is the correct model. Schistosomiasis induced tissue damage, immune impairment, and chromosome breakage are discussed as etiologic factors of bladder cancer (7,14,15) ; and similarly could contribute to the development of genital neoplasia as proposed by others (16) . However Schistosoma hematobium ova were only detected in the histologic slides of three invasive cancers (Fig.…”

“…Carcinoma ofthe urinary bladder is one ofthe frequent malignancies worldwide and the most common disease in Saudi Arabia and many tropical countries. There is some evidence to suggest that schistosomiasis, a parasitic human infection {Schistosoma haematobium), is implicated as an aetiologic agent in carcinoma of the urinary bladder [1][2][3]. Schistosomiasis affects about 200 million people worldwide [1].…”
