Active health monitoring of an aircraft wing with an embedded piezoelectric sensor/actuator network: II. Wireless approaches

Abstract: The objective of this study is to develop a wireless ultrasonic structural health monitoring (SHM) system for aircraft wing inspection. In part I of the study (Zhao et al 2007 Smart Mater. Struct. 16 1208–17), small, low cost and light weight piezoelectric (PZT) disc transducers were bonded to various parts of an aircraft wing for detection, localization and growth monitoring of defects. In this part, two approaches for wirelessly interrogating the sensor/actuator network were developed and tested. The first o… Show more

“…The crosshole scheme with iterative nature and great flexibly is more suited for any geometry and incomplete data set. To increase the sensitivity of tomography with sparse arrays, reconstruction algorithm for probabilistic inspection of defects (RAPID) is introduced [37]. In RAPID, the probabilities of defect occurrence at a point can be estimated from the changing severity of the signal of each transducer pair and its relative position to the pair.…”

“…The use of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems has sparked interest in recent years as they can be integrated directly into a composite structure during manufacture [18,19]. Sensors and embedded networks can be used to monitor various parameters such as local stress, strain, temperature, impact, delamination, and crack propagation in-situ and in real time [19][20][21][22][23][24]. Where the use of SHM and NDE are combined, it becomes possible to carry out Bfocused^inspections using non-destructive techniques, saving both time and money.…”

“…One promising solution would be a SHM system that could be embedded into the structure, inspect the structural hot spots and download data or diagnostic results wirelessly to a remote station [4], [5], [6].…”
