Active Learning of the HL7 Medical Standard

Abstract: Health Level Seven (HL7®) is a standard for exchanging information between medical information systems. It is widely deployed and covers the exchange of information in several functional domains. It is very important and crucial to achieve interoperability in healthcare. HL7 competences are needed by all professionals touching information technology in healthcare. However, learning the standard has always been long and difficult due to its large breadth as well as to large and complex documentation. In this pa… Show more

“…Based on the evaluation of these documents, we opted for Ideopass, which is the precursor of the here used IdeoIdentity solution provided by Maincare Solutions [ 26 , 27 ]. The choice was motivated by the capacity of the application to simultaneously act as an identity sever, enabling the management of patient identity at the central level as well as in local ISs, and to support the HL7/IHE standards recommended for identity management [ 28 , 29 ].…”

“…Others are specific to healthcare such as the Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM). (Noumeir, 2018) Using a RESTful API eliminates the need to choose Windows or Linux line endings, or how to properly format string representations when using unusual delimiters like the pipe character (|), let alone SOAP envelopes. FHIR lowers barriers to implementation, especially for developers unfamiliar with legacy healthcare application protocols (e.g., HL72.x), due to adherence to RESTful design principles, which are ubiquitous in modern software development.…”
