Active learning on the ward: outcomes from a comparative trial with traditional methods

Abstract: The active methodology produced better results than the traditional methodology in a ward-based context. This study seems to be valuable in terms of the new evidence it demonstrates on learning methodologies in the context of the ward round.

“…By contrast with classroom learning, little is known about how to facilitate active engagement in lifelong learning in contexts other than those dedicated to learning, for instance the clinical workplace . This is important because a major part of medical education happens within clinical contexts and those are not intrinsically suited for active learning .…”

“…Learning through participation in clinical scenarios such as these has been described to increase students’ self-confidence, motivation and sense of reward, as well as facilitating understanding and knowledge acquisition [1517]. From my point of view, it was refreshing to learn by ″doing″ rather than ″seeing″.…”

“…Prado et al report that the use of more active learning methodologies are beneficial in a paediatric ward round, compared with traditional ward round teaching in three measured outcomes (their knowledge acquisition, whether they were stimulated to do self-directed learning and the student's opinion on whether the methods improved their knowledge) 11. Other novel methods of teaching and learning on a ward round have included using standardised patients in a simulated ward round, the use of video recording on ward rounds to enhance on-the-job teaching and learning and techniques to promote safe prescribing on ward rounds 1214…”
