Active metabolites of the genus Piper against Aedes aegypti: natural alternative sources for dengue vector control

Abstract: The mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is the principal vector of the viruses responsible for dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fevers. The mosquito is widespread throughout tropical and sub-tropical regions; its prevalence makes dengue one of the most important mosquito-borne viral diseases in the world occurring annually in more than 100 endemic countries. Because blood is essential to their development cycle, the Aedes species maintains a close association with humans and their dwellings. Fittingly, the most widely adopt… Show more

“…This includes both internal and external (topical) use of leaf extracts, infusions and decoctions (Taylor, 2006). Constituents of P. aduncum, like dillapiole and other phenylpropanoids, are potent insecticides (Fazolin et al, 2014;Marques and Kaplan, 2015;Pino et al, 2011;Piton et al, 2014;Ribeiro et al, 2016;Vila et al, 2005;Volpe et al, 2015). Extracts of P. aduncum have also been shown to possess antifungal properties (Santos et al, 2013).…”

“…In order to control these vectors, the researchers turned into making new and effective products from plant metabolites with insecticidal properties against various vector-borne disease transmitting insects including various genera of mosquito due to resistance and reverse effect on an ecosystem when synthetic insecticides pyrethroids and other synthetic insecticides. In this scenario, many investigations were carried out with the help of plant derived metabolites against various mosquito species [ 5 ].…”

“…naturally produce several types of bioactive products . One specific insecticidal phenylpropanoid is dimethoxy‐4,5‐methylenedioxy‐allylbenzene (dillapiole) . EOs or extracts from Piper aduncum and Piper hispidinervum , known as ‘long pepper’ in Brazil, are reported as larvicidal, acaricidal and insecticidal .…”
