Active Power Filtering Under Unbalanced and Distorted Grid Conditions Using Modular Fundamental Element Detection Technique

Abstract: In this paper, an alternative control technique for producing reference current signal to manage operation of three-phase three-wire parallel-connected active power filter (PAPF) is presented. In the context of generating reference current, time-domain synchronous reference frame (SRF) technique has commonly been recognized to provide the benefit of control simplicity. However, its control structure is rather rigid which restricted its flexibility to be applied in different power system configurations. For ins… Show more

“…The alternative approach, named modular fundamental element detection (modular-FED), to perform extraction of harmonic currents and subsequently utilize that data to generate reference currents is introduced in [205]. It exhibits modular structure and operates without additional service from PLL, and it is found to be significantly outperforming the standard SRF technique, especially when the supply grid is unbalanced and/or distorted regardless of any nonlinear loads connected.…”

“…This SAPF uses the 'P-Q, Instantaneous Power Theory', i.e. initially to convert the 3-phase into two axes components, and then by calculating the active and reactive powers, the relevant harmonics are filtered out by generating compensating currents [7], [23]. The figure shows a possible parallel connection of the APHF or AHF, with a source inverter and a nonlinear load.…”

“…Because of this, sizing adjustment, and adaptive learning function for the ANN are not necessary. There are various hybrid ANN techniques available in the literature 27 – 29 , 35 , 36 . Out of these NBP based control method is implemented for our proposed SAPF.…”
