Active solar panel tracking system actuated by shape memory alloy springs

Abstract: The unique properties (e.g. Shape memory effects) exhibited by shape memory alloys (SMAs) offer the possibility of producing Smart Sun Tracking Mechanisms (SSTMs) for photovoltaic panels. The paper presents an experimental model of an active solar panel tracking system, conceived by authors. This model uses SMA springs as actuators. The SMA springs work as linear actuators by contracting with great strength and speed when heated. The SMA springs attached to this structure can be activated to accurately change … Show more

“…In comparison to the classic system, the maximum energy consumption is clearly higher than the average and falls at noon. Laying the panels in the shape of a hypersurface additionally eliminates the need for an expensive mechanical system to keep up with the sun ("sun-follower") [3,7] or expensive optical elements.…”

“…Practically, passive and active solar systems are distinguished [3], [4]. Passive tracking systems follow the Sun in the absence of a drive motor and are frequently used in equatorial areas because they have a single-axis tracking structure that allows maximum efficiency to be achieved only in those [5], [6], [7] .…”

“…On a larger scale, photovoltaic-based energy production systems with photovoltaic panels installed on building surfaces, are dedicated to household or industrial consumers, to powering transportation system and traffic safety systems [5], [6], and many other industrial applications [7]. For these kinds of installations, to reach the point of maximum power, various constructive variations for sun tracking systems are put to use: spring systems, form memory [7], tracking systems [8].…”
