Activity Cycle of Polar Faculae

Abstract: The data of the polar faculae observed by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan from the year 1951 through 1991 and the Mount Wilson Observatory from 1906 to 1990 were analysed. We found that the polar facula cycle is in complete antiphase with the sunspot cycle, and highly correlated with the sunspot cycle with a time shift of 51 months into the following sunspot cycle. We also made a quantitative analysis of the hemispheric distribution of polar faculae, and found that hemispheric asymmetry exists, … Show more

“…The correlation coefficients of MPSI with PMOD TSI, ACRIM TSI, and RMIB TSI are 0.582, 0.544, and 0.569, respectively, while the correlation coefficients of MWSI with PMOD TSI, ACRIM TSI, and RMIB TSI are only 0.105, 0.109,and 0.135, respectively. Following the method used in Li et al (2002), the probability is about 99% that the correlation coefficient of TSI with MPSI is larger than that of TSI with MWSI.…”

“…The test results are shown in Figure 3. In order to confirm whether there is a significant difference among the obtained correlation coefficients, the statistical test method of [34] is chosen to examine the differences between r reg_lag2 and r reg_lag0 , r indep_lag2 and r indep_lag0 , r reg_lag2 and r indep_lag2 , as well as r reg_lag0 and r indep_lag0 . The SSN (b).…”

“…Polar faculae (PF), considered as the main index of high-latitude solar activity, are in anti-phase with sunspot numbers (SNs) (Sheeley 1991(Sheeley , 2008Makarov & Makarova 1996;Li et al 2002;Deng et al 2011). As PF and SNs represent poloidal magnetic field and toroidal magnetic field respectively, their phase relation is of interest by means of different points of view (Hagino et al 2004;Callebaut & Makarova 2008), but it is still poorly investigated.…”
