Activity-Travel Patterns of Nonworkers in the San Francisco Bay Area: Exploratory Analysis

Abstract: Analysis of activity-travel patterns is an important component of any activity-based transportation planning exercise. Most of the current activity-travel literature focuses on studying the characteristics of workers. In comparison, little emphasis has been placed on studying nonworker activity-travel patterns. This paper presents the results of an exploratory analysis of the activity-travel patterns of non-workers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The attributes of a nonworker's overall activity-travel pattern a… Show more

“…From a broader societal standpoint, the analysis results indicate that single parents are not likely to pursue pure recreational episodes such as exercising, walking, and playing outdoor games (see also Misra and Bhat, 2000 for a similar result). This may be a reflection of the substantial time constraints on such individuals and suggests that population health concerns might warrant societal policies that provide more flexible time at work for single parents.…”

“…Individuals of Caucasian heritage, according to the GPS data, have a higher propensity to undertake non-work trips relative to individuals of other races (this is a result that has been observed in several earlier studies; see, for example, Misra and Bhat, 2000). The race difference is discernible from the survey data only for the non-work trips of individuals from large households (i.e., households with more than 4 individuals).…”

“…Several earlier activity analysis studies have focused on activity stop generation, either in isolation or jointly with other stop attributes such as location, duration, sequencing, and travel time to stop (for recent examples, see Wen and Koppelman, 1999;Misra and Bhat, 2000;Bhat and Singh, 2000;Bowman and Ben-Akiva, 2000;Kitamura and Fujii, 1998;Arentze and Timmermans, 2002).…”
