Actual and Intended Health-Related Information Seeking and Health Locus of Control

Abstract: Individuals with an internal health locus of control orientation and high health value have been found to express an intent to obtain a greater mean number of health pamphlets than people with an external orientation and/or low health value. After measures of behavioral intent were obtained, college students were afforded the opportunity to actually receive health-related written information. The previously stated finding was replicated for intended but not for actual health-related information seeking. The we… Show more

“…Our CMIS ''belief' factor, internal locus of control, was found to negatively impact seniors' use of the Internet for health information, which runs counter to some previous findings that internal locus of control facilitated health behaviors (e.g., Abella & Heslin, 1984;DeVito et al, 1982). A possible explanation of this counterintuitive result is that potential moderating factors influenced the directionality of the effect of internal locus of control on Internet health information-seeking behavior.…”

“…Whereas people with an internal locus of control believe that health outcomes are contingent upon their own behaviors or personal qualities, people with an external locus of control believe that health outcomes are controlled by others, luck, or fate (Wallston, Maides, & Wallston, 1976). Research provides support for the positive relationship between internal locus of control and intention to obtain health pamphlets (DeVito, Bogdanowicz, & Reznikoff, 1982) and preventive health behavior such as exercise, weight control, and rest=sleep and relaxation (Abella & Heslin, 1984). These findings suggest that higher levels of internal locus of control about health are associated with more proactive health care management.…”

“…Other studies, however, have not detected this relationship in predicting compliance with medication regimens in hypertensive patients (Lewis, Morisky, and Flynn, 1978); in utilizing an opportunity to receive health-related pamphlets @e-Vito, Bogdanowicz, and Reznikoff, 1982); or in predicting participation in physical activity during leisure time (Laffrey and Isenberg, 1983). …”

“…Moreover, in the context of health value, consumers may possess the additional motivation of wellbeing and good health, reinforcing consumers' trust in online information. Similarly, DeVito, Bogdanowicz, and Reznikoff (1982) note that consumers with external health locus of control orientation and high health value tend to disregard the risk and deny vulnerability to it. In the current study, respondents may be focusing on the positive aspects of the transaction: accessibility to pharmaceutical products that are not readily available via traditional channels.…”
