Acupuncture on Clinical Symptoms and Urodynamic Measurements in Spinal-Cord- Injured Patients with Detrusor Hyperreflexia

Abstract: Objectives: We investigated the possible use of acupuncture for the treatment of urinary incontinence caused by detrusor hyperreflexia in patients with chronic spinal cord injuries. Methods: A total of 13 patients (11 males, 2 females) suffering from urinary incontinence due to spinal cord injuries were treated by acupuncture, which was carried out with disposable stainless steel needles inserted into the bilateral BL-33 (Zhongliao) points on the skin of the third posterior sacral foramina. Urodynamic studies … Show more

“…28 Meanwhile, two other good-quality RCTs, although underpowered, reported nonsignificant results, 29,30 while two relatively inferior-quality studies reported significance. 31,32 Meanwhile, most acupuncture studies for bladder control in patients with spinal-cord injury, including two RCTs 33,34 and two case series, 35,36 indicated favorable outcomes despite limited quality. All in all, the recommendation rating for pain and bladder control in patients with spinal-cord injury is close to C with potential toward B.…”

“…7) for overactive bladder; and they demonstrated that urinary incontinence and urgency caused by overactive or unstable bladder, along with improvement in urodynamic measurements such as bladder capacity, were improved (94). In urodynamic measurements of spinal cordinjured patients, acupuncture could be another valuable therapeutic alternative for the treatment of urinary incontinence caused by detrusor hyperreflexia (95). In patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Kitakoji et al reported that acupuncture stimulation to bilateral BL33 was effective for BPH (stage I) patients (96).…”

“…A needle was inserted into each side of the foramina sufficiently deep for its tip to be close to the sacral periosteum (50-60 mm); the bilateral needles were then rotated reciprocally, with manual change in rotary direction, for 10 min. 7 The treatment was repeated once a week for 4 weeks.…”
