Acupuncture-Related Quality of Life Changes Using PROMIS Computer Adaptive Tests in a Pragmatic Trial with Oncology and General Integrative Medicine Patients: The Role of Baseline Acupuncture Expectations

Abstract: Overall, PROMIS computer adaptive tests were able to assess domains of QOL briefly. Although pretreatment acupuncture expectations highlighted subgroup differences in outcomes at baseline, linear-growth models demonstrated the positive effects of acupuncture over time on anxiety, depression, pain interference, and sleep disturbance.

“…71 Responsiveness has been demonstrated for both measures for spinal surgery 71 and cancer treatment, 75 and for acupuncture (Sleep Disturbance only). 76 Generic HRQOL was measured using the RAND-12 Health Status Inventory. 77 The RAND-12 is a 12-item self-report measure in the public domain that assesses physical health and mental health; mental health includes one fatigue/vitality item.…”

“…A previous pragmatic trial studied oncologic and integrative medicine patients using PROMIS scores. 22 There are advantages and disadvantages to using PROMIS to measure outcomes. One major advantage is that PROMIS is administered in computer adaptive testing form, theoretically providing improved measurement precision.…”

“…Future research should also consider the value of longitudinal changes in the quality of life using patient-reported outcome measurement tools to measure patient well-being, 34 as well as quality of life measures 35 that are important to the patient and take into consideration the patient's perspective. 34…”

“…Given the small sample size and other limitations discussed above, future research should utilise a larger RCT comparing acupuncture with a sham control or standard treatment, accompanied by clinical diagnosis of anxiety. Future research should also consider the value of longitudinal changes in the quality of life using patient‐reported outcome measurement tools to measure patient well‐being, as well as quality of life measures that are important to the patient and take into consideration the patient's perspective …”
