Acupuncture to Promote Recovery of Disorder of Consciousness after Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has become an economic and social burden for patients and their families. While acupuncture is an effective tool for promoting recovery of disorder of consciousness (DOC) following TBI, there have been no comprehensive meta-analyses and/or systematic reviews addressing this topic. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the therapeutic efficacy of acupuncture for DOC after TBI. All randomized controlled trials (RCTs) incorporating acupuncture, or acupuncture… Show more

“…Significant higher efficiency in disorders of consciousness treatment following traumatic brain injury was found with the acupuncture group as compared to that with the control. 77 The World Health Organization has reported that acupuncture can be used to effectively treat 31 symptoms including cardiac pain, hypertension and arrhythmias. 78 Many studies revealed the therapeutic efficacy in hypertension, hypotension, arrhythmias, angina pectoris and myocardial infarction with the emphasis on acupoints Neiguan (PC 6) and Zusanli (E 36).…”

“…[15] Few studies have investigated acupuncture as an adjuvant therapy in the acute phase of TBI (within 2 weeks after injury), which high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are particularly lacking. [16] For this reason, and taking into account the preliminary results of the previous trials, a standardized RCT is planned to assess the effect of acupuncture on the prognosis of patients with TBE. The method of monitoring and quantitatively analyzing brain edema based on head computed tomography (CT) can be very convincing, and complementary acupuncture treatment in the acute-phase TBI (starting within 72 hours after injury) can be a novel idea of designing in this clinical trial.…”

“…Even though the acupuncture has been observed to be an effective treatment for patients with TBI, some of the acupuncture data remain weak and unconvincing [15] . “…Therefore, there is urgent need for effective, simple, and safe methods to promote awakening from an unconscious state. Our previous meta-analysis [ 20 ] showed that acupuncture fared well in the treatment of TBI-induced DOC in which “shuigou (DU 26)” was the most important and frequent point targeted. As such, acupuncture has been shown to be an effective therapy for TBI.…”
