Acute abdomen revealed Streptococcus gordonii infective endocarditis with systemic embolism

Abstract: Infective endocarditis can result in potentially fatal complications such as heart failure, systemic embolization, mycotic aneurysm and neurological complications. Staphylococci and streptococci are the most common causative agents of infective endocarditis, with Streptococcus gordonii being a rare cause. We present a case of infective endocarditis in a young patient who presented with an acute abdomen 2 months after being diagnosed with cerebrovascular accident. An abdominal computed tomography revealed super… Show more

“…Mitral valves were most commonly involved (52%), and in almost one‐fifth of the cases, both the aortic and mitral valves were involved 7,28,32 . Almost a third of the patients developed valve complications in the form of dysfunction or perforation, although the data were not available in almost half of the cases 17,22,27–32 …”

“…1 Regarding the VSG classification, Streptococci mitis is the most common cause of IE, while Streptococcus gordonii has historically been an uncommon cause of IE. 4 The mitral valve aneurysm (MVA) is a rare complication associated with IE of the aortic valve. MVA incidence in the setting of IE has decreased from approximately 3.5% to less than 0.3%.…”

“…can cause various diseases, ranging from mild skin infections to necrotizing fasciitis, which can threaten the health of not only animals, but also humans (Belstrom et al, 2021). This genus consists of both commensal species that colonize the skin and nose, as well as pathogenic and opportunistic strains that can be isolated for various diseases: upper respiratory tract, pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, otitis, ophthalmitis, hepatitis, endometritis, and aerosacculitis (Weiser et al, 2018; Chang et al, 2022). Some types of streptococci are one of the main colonizers and normal flora of the oral cavity -Streptococcus mitis and S. oralis, which protect it from inflammatory processes by producing hydrogen peroxide, neutralizing acids, and secreting antimicrobial compounds, competing with opportunistic and pathogenic microorganisms.…”
