Purpose Although more than 30,000 teenagers had an induced abortion in France in 2007 (14.3% of all abortions), little is known about their abortion experience. We explore young women’s decisions related to their abortion and the patterns of abortion care among teenagers in France, and draw particular attention to the contraceptive circumstances surrounding the abortion. Methods The data are drawn from the French National Survey of Abortion Patients conducted in 2007, comprising 1,525 women aged 13–19 years. Results A majority of French teens (82%) reported their pregnancy was unplanned and took on the responsibility of having an abortion: 45% made the decision alone, 46% shared the decision with their family or partner, and 9% reported the decision was made on their family’s or partner’s request alone. Sixty-nine percent of teenagers were eligible for both medical and surgical abortions, but only 43% thought they were given a choice of methods. Two-thirds of pregnancies were caused by contraceptive misuse or failure, mostly due to condom slippage or breakage (26%) or inconsistent pill use (20%). In 68% of cases, teenagers were prescribed a more effective method than the one they were using before, although only 11% received a prescription for a long-acting method. One in five teenagers reported not receiving a prescription for contraception. Conclusions Our results reveal varying degrees of young women’s autonomy in the decisions regarding their abortion. Although most teens switch to more effective methods of contraception after an abortion, only a minority receives a prescription for a long-acting method.

Background: Adolescent pregnancy is a global issue. The majority of these adolescents experience unintended pregnancy ending in abortion. Knowledge gaps and misconceptions about reproductive health are the main reasons for unintended pregnancy among adolescents. Objective: This study aims to identify knowledge, attitudes, practices, and related factors of reproductive health among adolescent post-abortion or those seeking abortion at Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital (HOGH), a tertiary hospital in Vietnam. Methods: Ours was a descriptive cross-sectional study of 103 adolescents who sought induced abortions between January 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. Participants were interviewed directly via questionnaires to collect information. Results: The mean age of participants was 16.3 years. 64.1% of the population did not have general knowledge regarding reproductive health, 42.7% of subjects displayed incorrect attitudes regarding reproductive health. As a result, lack of knowledge and incorrect attitudes led to unsafe sex. The percentage of adolescents practicing unsafe sex is incredibly high (90.3%) thus causing unintended pregnancies. Education levels and family economic status were the main factors linked to knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding reproductive health. Conclusion: Most adolescents seeking abortion had poor KAP regarding reproductive health. Their KAP of reproductive health were linked to levels of education and family economic status. The findings emphasize the need to provide reproductive health care information and services for adolescents, and the need for appropriate attention from both family and society to the target group. We believe this will result in the improvement of their health and the avoidance of unfortunate consequences.

“…Αυτό το γεγονός τις εκθέτει σε µεγαλύτερο κίνδυνο ανάπτυξης ψυχολογικών προβληµάτων µετά την επέµβαση.Πολύ συχνά οι ανήλικες κοπέλες αναφέρουν ότι δεν ενηµερώθηκαν ορθά και έγκαιρα από τις αρµόδιες υπηρεσίες µε αποτέλεσµα να βιώσουν τροµακτικό άγχος µετά την πραγµατοποίηση της247 . Εξάλλου έρευνα που πραγµατοποιήθηκε στην Αµερική µε τυχαία δείγµατα, διαπίστωσε ότι τουλάχιστον το 19% των ανηλίκων γυναικών που έχουν κάνει άµβλωση υποφέρει από διαγνωσµένη µετατραυµατική αγχώδη διαταραχή252 . Περίπου οι µισές εµφάνιζαν πολλά από τα συµπτώµατα της ψυχικής αυτής νόσου, ενώ 20 ως και 40% εµφάνιζε µέτρια ως και υψηλά επίπεδα άγχους.Το γεγονός ότι πολλοί ερευνητές αναφέρουν ότι οι ανήλικες κατά την διάρκεια της επέµβασης νοιώθουν δυνατότερους πόνους από ό,τι γυναίκες µεγαλύτερης ηλικίας, αποδίδεται στα υψηλότερα επίπεδα άγχους και φόβου που νοιώθουν οι ανήλικες πριν την άµβλωση.…”
