Acute and Subacute Toxicity Study of Methanolic Extract of ceiba pentandra (Linn.) Gaertn. on Rats

Abstract: The purpose of toxicity testing is to provide adequate database to make decisions concerning the toxicology properties of chemical and commercial products. In some situations, the purpose is to decide whether a material will be safe. Under the conditions of expected use in other situations, the objective is to establish the safe limits in condition of use. The methanolic extract of ceiba pentandra was evaluated for acute and subacute toxicity in adult Wistar rats. For the study of acute toxicity, the methanol … Show more

“…A 28-day study is considered as a subacute toxicity testing, which is well accepted for eliciting any toxicity on long-term feeding. It gives valuable information on the cumulative toxicity of a substance, forget organs, physiological organ and metabolic effects of a compound on prolonged exposure at low dose (Sathya and Kokilavani 2012;Gandhare et al 2013;Ghode and Rajkapoor 2013). The feeding of GOD preparation to male Wistar rats for 4 weeks was not associated with any abnormalities in growth, food intake and some clinical chemistry biomarkers.…”

“…This plant grows in tropical regions and it is used to treat not only diabetes but also hypertension, dizziness, headache, constipation and fever [3]. Given the large number of ethnotherapeutical uses of C. pentandra, it has been subject of many pharmacological studies which revealed that extract from various parts possesses anti-fungal [4], anti-diarrheal [5], anti-ulcer [6], hepatoprotective [7], anthelminthic [8], angiogenesis [9], anti-inflammatory [10] and hypolipidemic [11] activities. C. pentandra is rich in sesquiterpene lactones [12], isoflavones [3] and naphthoquinone [13].…”

“…Again, lyses of blood cells, inhibition of blood cells synthesis and or significant alterations in haematological parameters have been associated with anaemia especially, following the administration of a toxic agent. 14,15 From our results, TAE did not cause any significant changes in the haematological parameters analysed indicating it may not have toxic effects on the haematological parameters. Moreover, marked changes in the levels of biochemical parameters such as total protein, albumin, bilirubin, AST, ALT, GGT and ALP are used to detect abnormal functioning liver or the presence of hepatocellular damage.…”
