Acute Effect of Cigarette Smoking on Pupil Size and Ocular Aberrations: A Pre- and Postsmoking Study

Abstract: Aim. To evaluate the acute effects of cigarette smoking on photopic and mesopic pupil sizes and wavefront aberrations. Methods. Cigarette smoker volunteers were recruited in the study. Photopic and mesopic pupil sizes and total ocular aberrations were measured before smoking and immediately after smoking. All volunteers were asked to smoke a single cigarette containing 1.0 mg nicotine. Pupil sizes and total ocular aberrations were assessed by optical path difference scanning system (OPD-Scan II ARK-10000, NIDE… Show more

“…Patients who had intraocular pressure greater than 21 mmHg were also excluded. Since smoking might be associated with changes in pupil size, only non‐smokers were included. Additionally, only the subjects who had not used drugs or consumed alcohol during the previous year, had no diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, had taken no systemic medications during the last three months, and had not used any anti‐prostate drugs such as prazosin, terazosin, or tamsulosin, were included.…”

“…Healthy participants were recruited, who were defined as those without any systemic disease and with a best‐corrected visual acuity (BCVA) equal or greater than 6/6 according to the Snellen chart. Participants had no history of any ocular problem other than spherical or cylindrical refractive errors less than or equal to 1.00 D. Since smoking may be associated with changes in pupil size only non‐smokers were included in the study. Moreover, the following participants were excluded: those who had used drugs or consumed alcohol during the previous year; those with diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy; those who had taken systemic medications during the last three months; and those who had used any anti‐prostate drugs such as prazosin, terazosin or tamsulosin.…”

“…Average age was 25.91 years. Participants were asked to not wear bifocal or varifocal glasses on the day of testing as well as being requested to not consume caffeine or smoke 60 min prior to testing as this can influence pupil activity (Erdem et al, ; Wilhelm, Stuiber, Luedtke, & Wilhelm, ). These instructions were identical across subsequent experiments.…”
