“…In accordance with other alcohol studies (Toro et al, 1973;Christiansen et al, 19841, we found no changes in Tser, Tsal, and E2 levels following acute alcohol intake. The decrease in DHT concentrations after consumption of self-brewed beer found in this study is in agreement with studies on the effects of alcohol consumption on sex hormone levels by Christiansen et al (1984) and Couwenbergs (1988). The observed decrease in DHT is illuminated by animal experiments which demonstrate that the alcohol metabolism in the liver and Leydig cells of rats activates enzymes that convert DHT (5~-androstan-17(3-01,3-one) to 5a-androstan-3~,17p-diol and 5a-androstan-3PJ7P-diol and thus cause a decrease of circulating DHT levels in the serum Fischer-Simpson, 1984, 1985).…”

“…All others denied strong preferences. Furthermore, experimental and clinical data suggest that sex hormones affect adiponectin concentrations, and among healthy males, effects of alcohol on sex hormones varied by drinking pattern and between beer and wine, indicating a potential explanation for our findings (1315). …”

“…It is possible that differences in alcohol intake may have modulated these relations. Estradiol levels were increased after acute alcohol intake in 72 healthy men (Couwenberg, 1988), and earlier studies have observed elevated estradiol levels in current male and female alcohol users (Handa et al, 1997;Muti et al, 1998;Reichman et al, 1993).…”

“…The alcoholmediated estrogen elevations may be a result of increased aromatization (Couwenberg, 1988) or decreased catabolism in the liver (Sarkola et al, 2000).…”
