Acute effects of mixed circuit training on hemodynamic and cardiac autonomic control in chronic hemiparetic stroke patients: A randomized controlled crossover trial

Abstract: Objectives: To investigate whether a single bout of mixed circuit training (MCT) can elicit acute blood pressure (BP) reduction in chronic hemiparetic stroke patients, a phenomenon also known as post-exercise hypotension (PEH).Methods: Seven participants (58 ± 12 years) performed a non-exercise control session (CTL) and a single bout of MCT on separate days and in a randomized counterbalanced order. The MCT included 10 exercises with 3 sets of 15-repetition maximum per exercise, with each set interspersed with… Show more

“…Although sympathoinhibition likely occurs postexercise, its role in prolonged BP reductions is unclear. Primary trials across diverse populations reported increased sympathetic and/or reduced vagal activity with PEH [15,18,19,[55][56][57][58][59][60]. Recent meta-analyses observed parallel increases in sympathetic and/or decreases in parasympathetic modulation after both aerobic and resistance exercise, contrary to expectations, irrespective of resting BP [52,35].…”

“…AUC was calculated by the trapezoidal method similar to mentioned in other studies. (27, 28) We analysed the area by the height and width of the LF and HF peaks across PSD. For the time domain analysis, we calculated BTB MAP CoV using the equation:(29)…”

“…For absolute BTB BPV we took the sum of PSD values within the LF and HF bands. AUC was calculated by the trapezoidal method similar to mentioned in other studies (Fonseca et al., 2022; Pruessner et al., 2003). We analyzed the area by the height and width of the LF and HF peaks across PSD.…”
