Acute Effects of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation on Peak Torque and Muscle Imbalance

Abstract: Background: The effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching on muscle imbalance are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to examine the acute effects of PNF stretching on knee extension and flexion peak torque (PT), as well as the conventional and functional hamstrings to quadriceps (H:Q) ratios. Methods: Fifteen men (age = 22 ± 1 years; body mass = 76 ± 12 kg; height = 176 ± 7 cm) and fifteen women (age = 22 ± 2 years; body mass = 63 ± 8 kg; height = 161 ± 5 cm) performed … Show more

“…This ensured participants had similar low levels of strength before participating in the study. Therefore, based on the classification used in previous studies [20,21], participants may be considered as being recreationally or physically active. Participants reported having no knee injuries and were asked to refrain from exercise 2 days before starting the study.…”

“…When the H:Q ratios of ballet dancers were compared to modern dancers, it was found ballet dancers had slightly lower knee extension strength, slightly higher knee flexion strength, and higher H:Q ratios than the modern dancers at 180°·s −1 [ 30 ]. This suggests H:Q ratio imbalances may be style- or sport-specific, as different sporting activities alter strength characteristics [ 30 , 31 , 32 ]. Training programs of athletes with higher H:Q ratios could be used as a reference to develop injury prevention and strength training programs for athletes with low H:Q ratios.…”

“…PNF biasanya dipergunakan untuk mengatasi beberapa hal seperti cidera pada sendi siku dan peningkatan ruang gerak sendi, PNF biasanya dipergunakan untuk terapi mengatasi hal ini (Birinci et al, 2019). Kasus berikutnya adalah penggunaan PNF untuk mengatasi cidera pada hamstring (Ruas et al, 2018) sendi pada lutut (Golpayegani & Emami, 2017).…”
