Acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance intensification for polio certification in Kaduna state, Nigeria: lessons learnt, 2015–2016

Abstract: BackgroundNigeria has made remarkable progress in its current efforts to interrupt wild poliovirus transmission despite the re-emergence of wild poliovirus in 2016. The gains made in Nigeria have been achieved through concerted efforts by governments at all levels, traditional leaders, health workers, caregivers, and development partners. The efforts have involved an elaborate plan, coordination, and effective implementation of routine immunization services, supplemental immunization activities, and acute flac… Show more

“…In absolute terms, there was improvement in reporting across all countries, with the lowest evidence-based improvement being in Chad (32%). This further supports AFP surveillance intensification that AVADAR elaborates, leading to reduction in silent areas [12]. Considering the traditional AFP cases reported, the AVADAR cases, and the silent district reduction reported in the same period ( Table 2 and Table 3), we have provided the P values for comparisons in Table 4.…”

“…Acute accid paralysis (AFP) surveillance is one of the four bedrock strategies for polio eradication and it includes the detection and investigation of cases of new onset of accid paralysis in children aged <15 years or any person, of any age, whom a clinician suspected to have poliomyelitis [1](2). AFP surveillance aims to ensure that there is no case of AFP in our communities, which is an essential means of monitoring the progress towards polio eradication (2) .…”
