Acute Limb Ischemia

Abstract: Acute limb ischemia is technically defined as ischemia of the lower extremities lasting 14 days or less. The condition affects between 15 and 26 persons per 100,000 each year in the United States. The associated morbidity and mortality is extremely high, with 1-year mortality rates reported at over 40%. Acute limb ischemia is 20 times more common in the lower extremities than the upper extremities. Both interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons bring unique skills to the table in caring for these patie… Show more

“…The AGGF1, HIF-1α, and VEGF mRNA levels in the musculus gastrocnemius of the three dose groups were significantly higher than those of the model group (P<0.05). These findings reflect that AGGF1 eukaryotic expression vector can increase AGGF1, HIF-1α, and VEGF mRNA levels in the musculus gastrocnemius of mice with lower limb ischemia [7,8]. In this study, cells at the wound of mice with lower limb ischemia were in an oxygen-deficient environment, which might be one of the reasons for the upregulated HIF-1α expression.…”

“…3 Thrombosis is most often due to prior bypass grafts or atherosclerotic disease in the region of occlusion which is associated with a history of diabetes, smoking, known peripheral arterial disease, myocardial infarction, or cerebrovascular accident. 1,2 Embolism, from a distant source, is most often due to atrial fibrillation, acute myocardial infarction, left ventricular dysfunction, and prosthetic cardiac valves. 1,6 Less common risk factors for acute limb ischemia include systemic thrombophilia, dissection, intimal hyperplasia, vasculitis, and aneurysm thrombosis.…”
