Acute Multidimensional Poverty: A New Index for Developing Countries

Abstract: This paper presents a new Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) for 104 developing countries. It is the first time multidimensional poverty is estimated using micro datasets (household surveys) for such a large number of countries which cover about 78 percent of the world´s population. The MPI has the mathematical structure of one of the Alkire and Foster poverty multidimensional measures and it is composed of ten indicators corresponding to same three dimensions as the Human Development Index: Education, Healt… Show more

“…So far, these measures have been systematically employed to analyze poverty in the developing world; see in particular Alkire andSantos (2011) andUNDP (2011). However, applying these techniques to advanced economies requires appropriately adapted specifications and operationalizations, such as choosing the relevant dimensions, appropriate indicators, and reasonable cutoffs.…”

“…A household is poor if per adult equivalent income is lower than 225,909 FCFA per year and extremely poor if it is lower than 141,521 FCFA per year 3 . As robustness check, we calculate poverty based on the Multidimensional Poverty Index, which takes into account households' living standards, health and education (Alkire and Santos, 2010). We have these data only for 2013.…”

“…It incorporates low earnings and the failure to obtain the fundamental products and ventures vital for survival with nobility. The MPI evaluates the nature and force of destitution at the individual level, with needy individuals being the individuals who are multiply deprived and the degree of their poverty is measured by the degree of their deprivation [2]. The MPI can join a scope of markers to catch the unpredictability A Case Study in Jalma Union of neediness and better advice strategies to alleviate it.…”
