Acute myo-inositol enhances swimming activity in goldfish

Abstract: Inositol in concentrations of 1-4 Mm (but not the control condition: mannitol-glucose) administered in aquarium water showed enhancement of swimming activity of goldfish after acute treatment (5 hours). These data support similar findings in rats. These data suggest that inositol may enhance motor activity which may be of relevance in neuropsychiatric disorders. Future studies of the effects of lithium on this activity, and its potential reversal by inositol may shed light on the possible involvement of the ph… Show more

“…6 Moreover, the addition of MI to animal feed can enhance the swimming activity of goldfish, thereby promoting livestock growth and preventing death. 7,8 It is well known that solubility is the basic data for the research of the crystallization process, as well as a key aspect of developing a crystallization process, and it has a guiding role in the optimization of the crystallization technique and the prediction of the final yield. An extensive database of solute solubility in different solvents is of great significance for obtaining high-purity products by crystallization.…”

“…Studies reporting an exogenous myo ‐inositol administration provide mixed results. Depending on the type of administration—acute or chronic—exogenous myo ‐inositol can have either an anxiolytic or stimulating effect in rats, respectively (Cohen et al, 1997), while single acute doses of myo ‐inositol at 1, 2 and 4 mM/L increase swimming activity in goldfish Carassius auratus , thus having a stimulating effect even with an acute exposition (Levine et al (1999)). An alternative explanation for these results would be that exogenous and endogenous myo ‐inositol do not have the same effect on the behaviour of fish.…”

“…Total distance travelled usually does not differ among uninfected and infected sticklebacks, in contrast to our findings (Berger & Aubin‐Horth, 2020; Grécias et al, 2017; Talarico et al, 2017). We included this behaviour measurement as it has been shown to be increased by exogenous myo ‐inositol in goldfish (Levine et al, 1999), while lithium treatment lowers it in zebrafish (Nery et al, 2014). Activity levels are a measure of anxiety (Maximino et al, 2010) but are also related to higher boldness, aggression and exploration (Bourne & Sammons, 2008; Brick & Jakobsson, 2002; Huntingford, 1976; Moretz et al, 2007).…”

“…In addition, Ino has a higher content of hydroxyl groups, a clearer structure and a lower molecular weight compared to widely studied natural materials; thus it is easier to clarify its function mechanism. However, although Ino has been widely used in medicine, 15–17 food, 18,19 feed 20–22 and the cosmetics 23,24 industry, to our knowledge Ino has seldom been studied in the field of flame retardants. Many issues, for instance the feasibility of compounding Ino with the traditional acid source of IFRs, the optimization of the IFR formulation with Ino and its derivatives as the carbon source, and suitable polymers for the application of Ino, need to be extensively explored.…”
