Acute Myocardial Infarction among Young Adult Men in a Region with Warm Climate: Clinical Characteristics and Seasonal Distribution

Abstract: The aim of this cross sectional study was to investigate the influence of the seasons on acute myocardial infarction (AMI) among young adult among young adults aged <45 years compared to old adults aged ≥45 years. The seasonal distribution of AMI hospital admissions among young adult men in eastern Taiwan was assessed. Data were extracted from 1413 male AMI patients from January 1994 to December 2015, including onset date, the average temperature (Tave) on the date of AMI hospitalization (AMI-Tave), and con… Show more

“…Increasing the prediction of BMI ≥ 25 kg/m 2 on MI in younger subjects can be observed by Chen et al 22 These similar observations can be found in previously reported studies. [23][24][25][26] PCI is considered the golden criterion therapy for AMI. Angiography was performed in all patients in our study through a femoral or radial artery approach by at least two interventional cardiologists.…”

“…Coronary artery disease (CAD) and acute coronary syndromes (ACS) account for the majority of premature deaths in the world ( 1 , 2 ). Although it occurs predominantly in older individuals, an upward trend in its incidence has been observed in individuals less than 55 years old over last two decades ( 3 , 4 ).…”

“…Although younger individuals with ACS have lower rates of recurrent cardiovascular events when compared to older individuals, the negative impact on the length of life with quality and productivity at work may be greater for younger individuals ( 5 ). Symptoms such as angina, dyspnea and depression, commonly found after myocardial infarction (MI), contribute to the decline in quality of life and loss of work capacity at the beginning of professional life ( 3 , 6 , 7 ).…”

“…The incidence of AMI is increasing in recent years and it is associated with younger ages where the prevalence in young populations less than 40 to 45 years old ranged between 2 and 10 percent around the world. 1,28 Current data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia, showed that the prevalence of AMI in adults aged 41-59 years old is 20% and in adults aged more than 60 years old is 18%. 5 Currently, the pathogenesis of AMI has not been fully clarified as their complex regulatory mechanisms have not been completely understood.…”
