Acute Peritoneal Dialysis in Patients with Acute Kidney Injury

Abstract: Acute PD remains a suitable treatment modality for patients with AKI in the era of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Nearly all patients who require dialysis can be dialyzed with acute PD without mechanical difficulties. This is particularly true in patients with refractory heart failure and acute pancreatitis who had a weak requirement for inotropes.

“…Even though PD is now rarely used to manage patients with AKI , and has been replaced by continuous venovenous therapies, it should not be discarded as a therapeutic option . PD has recently been suggested to provide outcome data as good as daily HD in the management of ICU patients with AKI , and guidelines for the use of PD to treat patients with AKI clearly stated that PD provides an acceptable treatment option for patients with AKI . Further, PD offers several advantages over HD by being a simple, safe, gentle, and efficient RRT method.…”

“…PD may be a good option under certain circumstances such as hemodynamic instability, limited vascular access, active bleeding or bleeding tendencies. PD can also be used for acute kidney injury, heart failure, elderly patients, and urgent-start dialysis [7,[22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30]. As stated previously one of the key steps to having a successful PD program is having access to timely PD catheter placement [31].…”
