Acute stress in patients with brain cancer during primary care

Abstract: It has been critically discussed whether the diagnosis of ASD is appropriate in cancer patients due to the often future-related nature of cancer-related traumatic events. The diagnosis of ASD was justified in the vast majority of affected patients due to the specific, acute and past traumatic experiences in concordance with the DSM and International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) trauma definitions. Thus, ASD is a common and relevant psychiatric comorbidity in patients… Show more

“…This is in agreement with the finding reported in all cancer patients in the original CCOP study. 18 A wide range of the reported prevalence of CAM use can be found in literature 32 : 80% patients with early breast cancer had used CAM during treatment, 33 and about 66% breast cancer survivors used CAM in the previous 12 months; most commonly used CAM treatments were relaxation or meditation, herbs, and “spiritual healing.” 34 This has varied with the heterogeneous samples of populations studied, study designs, types of cancers and CAM modalities, and time of study relative to cancer experience. Another such example is a prospective study of women with early breast cancer in Australia where 16.4% had consulted a CAM practitioner and 11% had used one of the CAM products (hormonal or herbal) commonly used for relief of menopausal symptoms in the previous 12 months in comparison to about 7% at the time of diagnosis.…”

“…Such individuals, who are often overwhelmingly anxious about the implications of their diagnosis and preoccupied with treatment decisions, may be unwilling or unable to consider participation in a research project or even to provide informed consent at such a time of personal upheaval. In research that has been conducted to investigate the frequency of traumatic stress disorders in cancer patients, ASD was identified in approximately one quarter of patients with brain cancer, localized breast cancer, and first‐onset head and neck, or lung cancers . The adverse effects of full and threshold ASD and PTSD on health outcomes, quality of life, and survival in other populations highlight the clinical relevance of these findings.…”
