Acute suppurative parotitis in a 33-day-old patient

Abstract: Acute suppurative parotitis is a rare disease in childhood. Its incidence is higher in premature newborns. Parotid swelling and pus drainage from Stenson's duct is pathognomonic, and Staphylococcus aureus is the causative agent in most cases. Here, a 33-day-old patient with acute suppurative parotitis is presented.

“…Bacterial ascent from oral cavity and sepsis induced hematological spread may also occur. 7,13 Mechanical obstruction caused by sialolith and neoplasm should be excluded by imaging. The main stay of treatment is administration of parenteral antibiotics for 7-10 days, appropriate to sensitivity pattern of causative organism.…”

“…Bacterial sialadenitis is exceptionally common in children, and the parotid is the most frequent salivary gland to be affected, with Staphylococcus aureus being the most common pathogen. Suppurative parotitis frequently affects premature infants (35%-40% of cases) and immunosuppressed children, with dehydration being the main predisposing factor (19)(20)(21).…”
