Water resources are crucial for the development of ecosystems and humanity. The Yellow River Basin (YRB), as an important ecological area in China, is facing significant challenges in ecological protection and high-quality development due to global climate change and intense human activities. In order to alleviate the water resources crisis in the YRB, it is necessary to calculate the resilience of the water resources system and identify the main influencing factors. This paper considered the factors of water resources, social economy, and ecological environment, then constructed an evaluation framework of the water resources system resilience (WRSR) from three aspects: resistance, restoration, and adaptability. Taking nine provinces along the YRB as a case study, the WRSR was measured by using the entropy weight TOPSIS model, and its driving factors were analyzed with Geographical Detectors (GD). The results showed that: (1) From 2010 to 2022, the WRSR in the Yellow River Basin and various provinces was showing a fluctuating increasing trend, in which Ningxia had the highest average WRSR (0.646), while Shanxi had the lowest (0.168). (2) From three dimensions, the development trends of resistance, restoration, and adaptability in the YRB and various provinces from 2010 to 2022 were relatively stable. Shandong’s resistance level far exceeded that of other provinces, having the highest average resistance value (0.692), and Ningxia had the highest average value of restoration (0.827) and adaptability (0.711). However, Gansu had the lowest average value of resistance (0.119), Sichuan had the lowest average value of restoration (0.097), and Shandong had the lowest average value of adaptability (0.110). (3) In terms of impact factors, the development and utilization rate of water resources (C13) and the development and utilization rate of surface water resources (C14) in the restoration subsystem consistently ranked in the top two of influencing factors. Similarly, the water consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP (C26) in the adaptability subsystem consistently ranked within the top ten. On the other hand, the natural population growth rate (C6) in the resistance subsystem, as well as the impact of ammonia nitrogen emissions (C9) and total precipitation (C2) in wastewater, exhibited an upward trend. Based on these, this paper provides relevant suggestions for improving the WRSR in the YRB.

Identification of key brittleness factors and multi-scenario analysis of the water-energy-food-ecology nexus vulnerability based on NRS-BN

Water, energy and food are the basic resources on which human beings depend for survival. With the intensification of human activities, the demand for resources represented by water, energy and food continues to increase, resulting in increasing pressure on the ecological environment, and the vulnerability of water, energy, food and ecosystem becomes increasingly prominent. Identifying the critical vulnerability factors of the water-energy-food-ecology nexus and formulating targeted management measures have become the key to achieving sustainable development. This paper innovatively proposes to study the water-energy-food-ecology nexus from the perspective of vulnerability for the first time, in which the vulnerability evaluation index system of the water-energy-food-ecology nexus is firstly constructed based on the VSD framework, and the attribute reduction is carried out using neighborhood rough sets. Then, a Bayesian network model is built and parameter learning is performed by combining machine learning and expert experience. Finally, different scenarios are set up to identify the key factors that hinder the vulnerability reduction of the water-energy-food-ecology nexus and obtain the vulnerability probability of the nexus under different scenarios using forward and backward inference and sensitivity analysis of Bayesian networks, overcoming the drawback that many prediction models cannot achieve diagnostic inference. The results show that: 1) from 2008 to 2019, the overall vulnerability of the water-energy-food-ecology nexus in the Yangtze River Economic Belt is low. 2) The key factors at the indicator level that hinder the vulnerability reduction of the water-energy-food-ecology nexus mainly include the storage capacity of water conservancy projects, wastewater discharge per 10,000-yuan GDP, and water consumption per 10,000-yuan GDP, and the subsystem level is water, food, energy and ecology system, in that order. 3) The reduction in vulnerability within an individual subsystem can have a beneficial impact on reducing vulnerability within the water-energy-food-ecology nexus. However, this reduction may also lead to an increase in vulnerability within other subsystems. Therefore, in the process of developing water, energy, food, and ecology system, high priority should be given to the coordinated development of all four.

Study on the Coordination of New Urbanization and Water Ecological Civilization and Its Driving Factors: Evidence from the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

For sustainable development of the world, it is crucial to solve the problems related to water environment pollution, water shortage, and the inefficient utilization of water resources during the process of urbanization in developing countries. At present, scholars mainly focus on the measurement of new urbanization (NU) and the water ecological civilization (WEC) level and the coordination relationship between NU and ecological civilization. However, there have been few studies on the coordination relationship between NU and WEC and its driving factors. We take the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) in China as a case study, construct the indicator system of NU and WEC, analyze the current situation of NU and WEC in the YREB, and study the coordination state of NU and WEC in the YREB from 2011 to 2020 by using a state coordination function. We further examine the factors driving the coordination of NU and WEC by employing a two-way fixed-effects model. The results show the following: (1) The growth rate of NU and WEC in the YREB shows a fluctuating upward trend, where there is significant heterogeneity between the upper reaches, the middle reaches, and the lower reaches of the YREB. (2) The static coordination degree of NU and WEC in the YREB shows a trend of fluctuating upwards and then falling, and the dynamic coordination degree deviated from the coordinated development trajectory from 2018 to 2020. The classification of the static coordination degree of various regions in the YREB gradually becomes obvious with significant spatial aggregation characteristics, and the dynamic coordination degree of various regions has significant heterogeneity. (3) The opening-up degree, foreign direct investment, population growth, and urban–rural income gap are not advantageous to the coordination degree, while the marketization level, industrial structure, and human capital are advantageous to the coordination degree, but the regression coefficients of the latter two are not significant. The regional regression results show that the impacts of driving factors on the coordination degree have obvious heterogeneity. The research results provide a new idea and method that can be used by developing countries similar to the YERB to control water pollution, improve the ecological environment, alleviate water shortages, and improve the level of WEC in the process of NU.
